This
wonderful film "THE WAR BOYS" takes us to places other films have
feared to go and does so very well. It handles numerous "taboo" subjects
with aplomb, and gives the viewer a whole lot to think about. It brings
down boundaries of race, of nationality, of sexuality, of loyalty to
family and country, of generations. Three young vigilantes (David,
George and Greg) huddle on "la linea" (US-Mexico frontiers) ready to
chase illegals back across the border into Mexico... but they soon learn
that there are border lines deep within each one of them that each of
them has to cross. David and George have a past history of acting out a
physical attraction and this comes forth in a set of scenes that address
young male sexual identity challenges in some of the most beautifully
realized and subtle scenes on film. The third of the group, Greg, is a
US citizen of Mexican descent and will have to choose between his two
heritages.
INFO for the non-American viewers of this film: Mexican immigrants are called "beaners" in the local slang (from "beans"). The U.S. is building a security wall along the borderline with Mexico (La Linea), which is guarded by the border patrol and by volunteer groups of local US citizens (vigilantes). The Mexicans hate very much the border patrol and the vigilantes and the director shows this in a very smart way! E.g. when the three friends are having breakfast, watch carefully the reaction of the Mexican maid Maria when she hears that Gregorio's father was a border patrol!
